The World Needs a Different Kind of Social Media App
Discover why traditional social media is failing to cure loneliness and how activity-based connections can transform the way we build meaningful friendships in real life.
The United States and other developed countries are sounding alarms about the loneliness epidemic and social disconnection. Many experts warn that loneliness will kill you faster than a bad diet.
But why in the era where technology can instantly connect people from around the world, do people still feel so disconnected? How is it possible that with over 70% of the U.S. population actively using social media—translating to over 246 million users, and having hundreds if not thousands of digital friends—so many people still experience loneliness and isolation?
The Growing Mental Health Crisis
The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) published that between 2006 and 2018, the number of visits during which primary care physicians managed mental health concerns has increased by 50%. ***This is a very concerning statistic considering that loneliness and social isolation is one of the leading causes of anxiety and depression.
In the past decades, digital media seems to have overshadowed the importance of in-person interaction. Carefully curated and often fake user profiles on popular social media sites began to amplify the feelings of discouragement and anxiety for people who are genuinely looking to find authentic friendships and connect with others in their communities.
Bringing Back Real Connection
But how can we bring back the days where instead of digital friends and endless scrolling through user profiles and posts, we initiate an invite for a face-to-face interaction or just a conversation?
This was a mission for Dolphy Social, when a team of professionals set out to create a tool that would pioneer a different concept for meeting people. Not based on beautifully enhanced photos and exotic travel backdrops, but based simply on taking a chance to join a stranger for a short in-person activity or conversation, without the pressure to continue the friendship or feeling bad for rejecting someone.
Activity-Based Connections
Dolphy app creators believed that activity-based meet-ups will create an opportunity for users to socialize with each other in a more organic way, to find people they click with and know when they don’t. Meaningful friendships take time to build and come from the compounding interactions with each other, doing activities with each other, sharing life stories with each other.
Dolphy Social knew the world needs a different type of social media app. Try Dolphy Social app and make a difference in your social life!
